Designed for a wide audience, the West End Conservation Manual has proved to be as popular with specialist building professionals as it is with owners of historic buildings having no technical knowledge of conservation. It is divided into thirteen sections, each of which is fully illustrated and contains an extensive bibliography. The historical and biographical material will also be of interest to amenity and historical societies, museums, libraries and similar institutions. Although concentrating on the West End of Glasgow, the conservation principles and practices described in the Manual apply to many older towns and cities around central Scotland, and elsewhere in the country. UK sales of the original Manual have ranged from Shetland to Kent. Foreign orders have come from as far afield as Australia, Canada and Israel. The total content of the Manual amounts to 715 pages with over 1,000 illustrations.
The Manual was originally published in a series of thirteen individual sections, each dealing with a specific aspect of historic building conservation. These soft-bound sections fit into a loose-leaf binder, enabling single purchases and permitting updating in the future. Many of these sections are now out of print, and therefore the Trust has opted to update, revise and republish the entire Manual in pdf files on a CD-ROM format (suitable for current Windows and Mac operating systems).
The Manual contains the following sections:
"The matter-of-fact titles of these manuals belie their contents. If their object is to inform a reader faced with a conservation problem they achieve it with remarkable clarity and scope; but they do more.
They are fascinating and engrossing, even for anyone with only a passing or a purely aesthetic interest in conserving listed buildings."
- Brian K. Parnell, The Scottish Civic Trust Newsletter
"The Trust deserves the highest praise; I have not come across
anything else in the UK so comprehensive, informative and thorough."
- Bob Kindred, IHBC
"The complete West End Conservation Manual . . . is the conservation publishing bargain of the year!"
- IHBC News
